About the Department
The Department of Economics is one of the largest departments of the university. Established in the 1987-88 academic session with just 50 students, it has grown steadily over the decades. Today, 13 highly qualified, technology-oriented, and approachable faculty members provide quality education to approximately 375 students (300 undergraduates and 75 postgraduates) across diverse areas of economics. The department is also supported by 9 non-academic staff members who assist both students and teachers.
Offices and Administration
The department has a spacious office for the chairperson, along with two rooms for non-academic staff. Each faculty member also has an individual office. All offices are equipped with computers and internet access, and the department provides shared facilities including a photocopier, printer, scanner, CCTV camera with an LCD TV, and a water purification plant.
Classrooms and Computer Lab
The department has four classrooms, a seminar library, and a modern computer lab. Each classroom is fully furnished and fitted with a multimedia projector, creating an up-to-date and effective learning environment. Established with support from the HEQEP Sub-Project, the computer lab houses 40 computers and is equipped with air conditioning, a sound system, a multimedia projector, and internet access, enabling up to 40 students to work simultaneously. The department also has a well-equipped seminar room, which is used for Master’s classes when no seminars or workshops are scheduled.
Seminar Library
The seminar library holds about 3,000 books and journals covering a wide range of topics in economics. Under the HEQEP Sub-Project, 400 new, up-to-date books have been added to the collection. The library is air-conditioned and furnished to provide a comfortable setting for study and research. However, its current space does not fully meet the department’s requirements.
Other Facilities
The department maintains good sanitation facilities for students and teachers, and safe drinking water is available to everyone.
Our Alumni
Over the past three decades, the department has produced graduates who now hold a wide range of important positions in both the public and private sectors, contributing to national development through administration, banking, finance, research, development organizations, and business. Many alumni have also pursued opportunities abroad, with a significant number going on to teach and conduct research at universities and other institutions overseas, while others have established successful careers as expatriate professionals worldwide. Their achievements reflect the quality of education provided by the department and continue to enhance its reputation at home and abroad.
